Renaming Spatial Objects

The Rename tool is for renaming a range of objects with the same name or a shared portion of text.

For example, one could change the name of every object containing the text “Floor 1” in its name to “First Floor” instead.

Rename is case-sensitive. It is not limited to whole object names but will also rename portions of text within names that match the Replace text. For example, replacing “First” with “Second” will result in an object called “First Floor Entrance” being renamed to “Second Floor Entrance”.

To rename objects:

  1. Click or select Data > Rename.
    • The Rename dialog is displayed.
  2. Type the text to be replaced into the Replace box.
  3. Type the new text into the With box.
  4. Select the Scope of the change from these three options:
    • Selected objects – limits the change to objects that are selected in the workspace.
      • Disabled if nothing is selected in the workspace.
    • Selected search results – limits the change to objects that are selected within the Search Results tab.
      • Disabled if nothing is selected in the current Search Results tab.
    • All objects – applies the change to all objects within the model containing the original text.
      • Always enabled.
Note: The default Scope selection depends on selected objects and search results. Selected objects in the workspace have highest priority, then selected search results. The “All objects” option has the lowest priority.
  5. . Click OK to make the change.
    • A message shows the number of changes made.
